Anchorage, Alaska – U.S. Attorney Karen L. Loeffler announced today Gregory Donell Winters, a resident of Anchorage, Alaska, has been sentenced in federal court for distributing crack cocaine.

U.S. District Court Judge Timothy M. Burgess imposed a sentence of 60 months incarceration on Winters, 39.

According to Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Erin White Bradley, who prosecuted the case, Winters sold 37 grams of crack cocaine to a buyer on April 8, 2011. In fashioning a sentence, the Court noted a need to deter this type of criminal behavior, along with the fact that distributing crack cocaine is a serious offense.

Winters is the last of a group of five individuals from Grenada, Mississippi, to be convicted and sentenced for drug trafficking crimes this year. David Tidwell is currently serving a sentence of 180 months. Dolphus Griffin is serving a sentence of 150 months. Tidwell and Griffin were charged and convicted of drug trafficking conspiracy, and Tidwell was convicted of possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. At Tidwell’s sentencing, Chief United States District Court Judge Ralph R. Beistline noted Tidwell’s affiliation with the Gangster Disciples, a street gang formed in Chicago during the 1960s. According to testimony presented by the government at that hearing, the main purpose of the Gangster Disciples is to make money by selling illegal controlled substances. Prentiss Johnson and Anthony Johnson, also from Grenada, Mississippi, have been convicted of distributing crack cocaine. They have received sentences of 32 months and 9 months, respectively.

Ms. Loeffler commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Winters, Tidwell, Griffin, Prentiss Johnson and Anthony Johnson. SAUSA Bradley is a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office who is funded by the Municipality of Anchorage for the purpose of prosecuting gang-related and violent crime cases.
